Tips to Teach Cursive
It can be easier to teach students how to write in cursive by grouping letters with similar starting form together.
Typically, lowercase letters are easier to start with. You can follow this order:
- rounded top: c, o, a, d, g, q
- up and down: i, t, p, u, w, j, r, s
- loopy letters: e, l, h, b, f, k
- over the hump: n, m, v, x, y, z
Then for uppercase letters:
- from top curve to the left: O, A, C, E
- tight loop from top left: U, V, W, Y, Z, N, M
- tight loop from left and lift up: X, H, K
- straight down: P, R, B (you can also teach with a short tail that goes up before coming down)
- tight loop to the right: T, F
- bottom right climb up: S, G
- other letters with unique starting points: J, L, Q, I, D
